GET DOWN WITH THE PARTY – NICK RAY MACCANN

He just grabbed both my eyes.

Nick Ray McCann, born in Chicago in 1987, raised in Baltimore and currently based in NYC. His work features hard core parties, a spontaneous ability to capture feelings and a vast spectrum of places and people, exploring familiar objects and situations from unfamiliar angles. His art form seems easy thing to undertake, but it’s not at all. Even though young, he is not at all in his early stages. He takes away all the restrictions and his trend carries up the vivid present. Photography becomes just crafty in his hands.

AN OASIS OF PEACE

“I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stuffed. I want the cultures of all the lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.” – M.K. Gandhi.

Gandhi was a true believer of “Simple Living” and completely divorced form the ugly, mean and pretty side of life. Located at the beautiful site on the bank of the river in west India, Gandhi’s house is a true reflection of his thoughts and minimal lifestyle. It gives one, the glimpse of the other side of life which is pure and serene, which cares, which sings and at the same time is receptive.

PONTIAC GTO 1966

The GTO was the brainchild of Pontiac engineer Russell Gee, an engine specialist; Bill Collins, a chassis engineer; and Pontiac chief engineer John DeLorean. In early 1963, General Motors’ management issued an edict banning divisions from involvement in auto racing. At the time, Pontiac’s advertising and marketing approach was heavily based on performance, and racing was an important component of that strategy. With GM’s ban on factory-sponsored racing, Pontiac’s young, visionary management turned its attention to emphasizing street performance. In his autobiography “Glory Days,” Pontiac chief marketing manager Jim Wangers, who worked for the division’s contract advertising and public relations agency, states that John DeLorean, Bill Collins and Russ Gee were indeed responsible for the GTO’s creation. It involved transforming the upcoming redesigned Tempest (which was set to revert to a conventional front-engine, front transmission, rear-wheel drive configuration) into a “Super Tempest” with the larger 389 cu in (6.4 L) Pontiac V8 engine from the full-sized Pontiac Catalina and Bonneville in place of the standard 326 cu in (5.3 L) Tempest V8. By promoting the big-engine Tempest as a special high-performance model, they could appeal to the speed-minded youth market (which had also been recognized by Ford Motor Company‘s Lee Iacocca, who was at that time preparing the Ford Mustang).

The name, which was DeLorean’s idea, was inspired by the Ferrari 250 GTO, the successful race car. It is an Italian abbreviation for Gran Turismo Omologato, (exact translation is Grand Tourer Homologated) which means officially certified for racing in the Grand tourer class. The name drew protest from enthusiasts, who considered it close to sacrilege. The GTO was basically a violation of GM policy limiting the A-body intermediate line to a maximum engine displacement of 330 cu in (5.4 L). Since the GTO was an option package and not standard equipment, it could be considered to fall into a loophole in the policy. Pontiac General Manager Elliot “Pete” Estes approved the new model, although sales manager Frank Bridge, who did not believe it would find a market, insisted on limiting initial production to no more than 5,000 cars. Had the model been a failure, Estes likely would have been reprimanded. As it turned out, it was a great success. Pontiac’s intermediate line was restyled again for 1966, gaining more curvaceous styling with kicked-up rear fender lines for a “Coke-bottle” look, and a slightly “tunneled” backlight. The tail light featured a rare louvered cover, only seen on the GTO.

BACK TO BLACK…AND WHITE

Leica on May 10th announced the LEICA M MONOCHROM:  the first full-frame, 35 mm format digital camera to be designed exclusively and without any compromises for black-and-white photography.
It embodies Leica’s motto:  “Concentration on Essentials.”

The Leica M Monochrom has a full native resolution of 18 megapixels and a sensor that does not see colours, it see light and every pixel records true luminance values. The result is a pure black-and-white image with a much higher detail resolution, higher sensitivity and thus less noise.

The ISO range is from 160 to 10,000 and all images are JPEGs out of camera. Histograms displays unprocessed and unmodified raw data. At the touch of a button, images captured by the M Monochrom can be converted with characteristic toning effects from black-and-white film photography (sepia, cold or selenium toning).

Buyers benefit from a free online download for Adobe Lightroom 4 and a Silver Efex 2 licence, a software for black-and-white image processing. Silver Efex Pro 2 emulates over 20 different types of black-and-white film to recreate the glory of classical black-and-white film photography.

The price for this perfection? $7950.00, alas!

We love our bicycle and we cycle it with real proud! We admire our baby but we look with admiration at the other two wheels that ride the streets fast as us! A lot of times we felt the need to scream at a road fellow that his bicycle is hot and at the same time we would like to receive a comment like this! Well, now this is possible!

Thanks to K and J and their “your bike is hot” card!

DE ROUILLE ET D’OS

Jacques Audiard‘s latest movie, De rouille et d’os (Rust and Bone) is based on Canadian author Craig Davidson’s short story collection of the same name. Co-written by the director and Thomas Bidegain, the film is centred on characters on the margins of society, plagued by their inner demons and obsessions.

The movie follows the story of  Ali (Matthias Schoenarts), an unemployed 25-year-old man, who falls in love with Stéphanie (Marion Cotillard), a killer whale trainer.  He is a drop-out. She is a princess. She is beautiful and confident. After Stéphanie suffers a terrible accident, a bodily and intense relationship will develop between them. Ali will share genuine moments with her, without compassion, helping her to live again.

As the director was behind the stunning A Prophet, I simply can’t wait for this one. The film will be presented at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival.

Don’t Tell the World that You’re Waiting for Me
THREE summers have gone since the first time we met, love,
And still ’tis in vain that I ask thee to wed ;
I hear no reply but a gentle ” Not yet, love,”
With a smile of your lip, and a shake of your head.
Ah ! how oft have I whispered, how oft have I sued thee,
And breathed my soul’s question of ” When shall it be ?”
You know, dear, how long and how truly I’ve wooed thee,
So don’t tell the world that you’re waiting for me.

I have fashioned a home, where the fairies might dwell, love,
I’ve planted the myrtle, the rose, and the vine ;
But the cottage to me is a mere hermit’s cell, love,
And the bloom will be dull till the flowers are thine.
I’ve a ring of bright gold, which I gaze on when lonely,
And sigh with Hope’s eloquence, ” When will it be ?”
There needs but thy ” Yes,” love–one little word only,
So don’t tell the world that you’re waiting for me.

STOP GREEN HILL NOW.

Green Hill is a beagles farm located in the north of Italy, where those little dogs are condemned to vivisection. In the last years Green Hill has been taken over by Marshall Farm Inc., who is planning to make this center the biggest dog breeding in Europe for the vivisection business.
Today the debate within the scientific community on the vivisection usefulness is more than never high pitched, indeed more and more scientists and medics believe this practice is not helpful to the research, because animals are genetically different from humans and because now is possible to conduct experiments with alternative methods like cell culture.
What is out of discussion is the cruelty and the immorality of the experiments conducted on animals, but also the conditions in which they live waiting for their end.
Absolutely unethical is the fact that poor animals are treated as goods to commercialize to get profits, proving that vivisection today is nothing more than a macabre business.
For those and many more reasons I would like to invite you all to take position against Green Hill and the cruel practice of vivisection.
We should never forget that animals are living being and must be treated as such.

STOP GREEN HILL NOW! sign the petition.

ART BY CHANCE

Exploring India is truly blissful and surprising. The urban character and elements you find on streets, across various parts can leave you completely awestruck. From eye-catching Bollywood movie posters to ornamented trucks and auto- rickshaws, the colorful fabrics hanging on top of narrow shopping street – its sheer visual drama. From all these visual treats what fascinates me most are the hand painted signs made by Indian street artists. It is almost like the birth of their own pop-art rooted in the traditions and the way of life. This is what makes this country such a bustling melting pot of craziness(The Yin and the yang).   Maybe in a few years from now, these hand painted signs would completely disappear as most of the businesses are switching to quicker, cheaper yet the uglier vinyl.

PLYMOUTH BARRACUDA 1970

The Plymouth Barracuda was the first pony car, debuting two weeks before the Ford Mustang. It was quickly eclipsed by the Mustang and the Camaro/Firebird due, but would make a name for itself in 1970 when it was available with an engine its competition could only dream of, the Hemi.

Plymouth finally got the performance angle right for 1970, and they went full force into it. The Barracuda was moved over to the E-body platform, which it shared with the new Dodge Challenger. The Barracuda rode on a two inch shorter wheelbase than the similar Dodge Challenger, even though its overall body dimensions were the same. The performance models were called ‘Cudas and featured five different V8s, the 340, 383, 440, 440+6, and the almighty 426 Hemi. The 440s and the Hemi cars received a special high performance suspension to put all that power to the road. Standard Barracudas came with a flat hood, while ‘Cudas came with standard dual non-functional hood scoops. Optional on all ‘Cudas (and standard on Hemi’s) was a very functional shaker scoop, so named because it attached directly to the engine, and poked up through a hole in the hood and thus “shaked” whenever the engine did. The Hemi cost $871 and was installed on just 652 hardtops (out of 17,242) and 14 convertibles (out of 550) copies. It sported hydraulic lifters and was easier to tune than in previous years. The 440+6 was a bargin at just $250 and could keep up with the Hemi till about 70 mph. Both engines were tricky to drive: the 440+6 vacuum-actuated front and rear carbs came on with little warning, while the Hemi’s stiff throttle linkage sometimes snapped all eight barrels open at once.
Plymouth also built a special model for 1970: the Plymouth AAR ‘Cuda. AAR was taken from Dan Gurney’s All-American Racers, which raced ‘Cudas in he Sports Car Club of America Trans-Am racing series. But whereas Ford and Chevrolet built special models (Boss 302 Mustang and Camaro Z28) meant to mimic the race cars, Plymouth built a street rod. Along with the similar Dodge Challenger T/A, the AAR ‘Cuda sported a unique 340 cid V8 with 3×2 carbs that pumped out 290 bhp. The exterior was definitely unique with a matte-black lift-off fiberglass hood, through body-side strobe stripes, tri-colored AAR shield, and standard black ducktail spoiler. The AAR ‘Cuda also had special shocks and recambered rear springs which raised the rear end 1 3/4 inches over the regular ‘Cuda which allowed clearance for exhaust pipes that exited in front of the rear wheelwell (after routing through the standard muffler beneath the trunk). It also permitted the use of larger tires in the rear, one of the first uses of wider rear tires on a production automobile.

A beautiful example of creativity and craftmanship.

Olli Erkillä built this aerodynamic single speed as a gift of love for his girlfriend, or maybe it was recompense for spending so much time in the workshop lately!

The inspiration is an old Cinelli Laser. The frame itself is made out of recycled tubes from old bike frames. Construction element is 0.5mm sheet metal. The frame is very strong and weights about 3kg, complete bike is around 10kg. The tires are interesting as they were made by Pirelli and they result superb with the pearl white color!

REBEL

JAMES FRANCO · DOUGLAS GORDON · HARMONY KORINE · DAMON MCCARTHY · PAUL MCCARTHY ·

TERRY RICHARDSON · ED RUSCHA · AARON YOUNG

MOCA presents Rebel, conceived by James Franco with Douglas Gordon, Harmony Korine, Damon McCarthy, Paul McCarthy, Terry Richardson, Ed Ruscha, and Aaron Young. Rebel will be on view from May 15 through June 23, 2012, at JF Chen, a newly emerging contemporary art and design space, located at 941 North Highland Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90038.

Rebel is an interrogative ode to Nicholas Ray’s masterpiece Rebel Without A Cause (1955), conceived by James Franco to embrace and mine the main themes and events in the original film. The exhibition reinterprets the film’s legends, the people involved, its place in Hollywood, film as a medium, and behind-the-scenes footage, in a new, fresh, and unconventional presentation of film, video installation, photography, painting, drawing, and sculpture, housed in and framed by iconic, Hollywood structures.

In Rebel, the contributions of each artist are combined to capture the spirit of the original film through references to the auto and motorcycle culture of the 1950s, which James Dean was a part of; teenage angst and issues of identity back then, related to identity now; patrilineal exchange, and the relationships of father and son, and mentor and student; male and female sexuality; fiction and fact; and Hollywood and the art world. The Chateau Marmont is one of the central points in Rebel, and perhaps the single most significant reference and home to Hollywood behind the scenes life, acting as a linking structure to the exhibition, and to several of the works presented.

Emblems of Love
She

ONLY to be twin elements of joy
In this extravagance of Being, Love,
Were our divided natures shaped in twain;
And to this hour the whole world must consent.
Is it not very marvellous, our lives
Can only come to this out of a long
Strange sundering, with the years of the world between us?

He

Shall life do more than God? for hath not God
Striven with himself, when into known delight
His unaccomplisht joy he would put forth,—
This mystery of a world sign of his striving?
Else wherefore this, a thing to break the mind
With labouring in the wonder of it, that here
Being—the world and we—is suffered to be!—
But, lying on thy breast one notable day,
Sudden exceeding agony of love
Made my mind a trance of infinite knowledge.
I was not: yet I saw the will of God
As light unfashion’d, unendurable flame,
Interminable, not to be supposed;
And there was no more creature except light,—
The dreadful burning of the lonely God’s
Unutter’d joy. And then, past telling, came
Shuddering and division in the light:
Therein, like trembling, was desire to know
Its own perfect beauty; and it became
A cloven fire, a double flaming, each
Adorable to each; against itself
Waging a burning love, which was the world;—
A moment satisfied in that love-strife
I knew the world!—And when I fell from there,
Then knew I also what this life would do
In being twin,—in being man and woman!
For it would do even as its endless Master,
Making the world, had done; yea, with itself
Would strive, and for the strife would into sex
Be cloven, double burning, made thereby
Desirable to itself. Contrivèd joy
Is sex in life; and by no other thing
Than by a perfect sundering, could life
Change the dark stream of unappointed joy
To perfect praise of itself, the glee that loves
And worships its own Being. This is ours!
Yet only for that we have been so long
Sundered desire: thence is our life all praise.—
But we, well knowing by our strength of joy
There is no sundering more, how far we love
From those sad lives that know a half-love only,
Alone thereby knowing themselves for ever
Sealed in division of love, and therefore made
To pour their strength always into their love’s
Fierceness, as green wood bleeds its hissing sap
Into red heat of a fire! Not so do we:
The cloven anger, life, hath left to wage
Its flame against itself, here turned to one
Self-adoration.—Ah, what comes of this?
The joy falters a moment, with closed wings
Wearying in its upward journey, ere
Again it goes on high, bearing its song,
Its delight breathing and its vigour beating
The highest height of the air above the world.

She

What hast thou done to me!—I would have soul,
Before I knew thee, Love, a captive held
By flesh. Now, inly delighted with desire,
My body knows itself to be nought else
But thy heart’s worship of me; and my soul
Therein is sunlight held by warm gold air.
Nay, all my body is become a song
Upon the breath of spirit, a love-song.

He

And mine is all like one rapt faculty,
As it were listening to the love in thee,
My whole mortality trembling to take
Thy body like heard singing of thy spirit.

She

Surely by this, Beloved, we must know
Our love is perfect here,—that not as holds
The common dullard thought, we are things lost
In an amazement that is all unware;
But wonderfully knowing what we are!
Lo, now that body is the song whereof
Spirit is mood, knoweth not our delight?
Knoweth not beautifully now our love,
That Life, here to this festival bid come
Clad in his splendour of worldly day and night,
Filled and empower’d by heavenly lust, is all
The glad imagination of the Spirit?

He

Were it not so, Love could not be at all:
Nought could be, but a yearning to fulfil
Desire of beauty, by vain reaching forth
Of sense to hold and understand the vision
Made by impassion’d body,—vision of thee!
But music mixt with music are, in love,
Bodily senses; and as flame hath light,
Spirit this nature hath imagined round it,
No way concealed therein, when love comes near,
Nor in the perfect wedding of desires
Suffering any hindrance.

She

Ah, but now,
Now am I given love’s eternal secret!
Yea, thou and I who speak, are but the joy
Of our for ever mated spirits; but now
The wisdom of my gladness even through Spirit
Looks, divinely elate. Who hath for joy
Our Spirits? Who hath imagined them
Round him in fashion’d radiance of desire,
As into light of these exulting bodies
Flaming Spirit is uttered?

He

Yea, here the end
Of love’s astonishment! Now know we Spirit,
And Who, for ease of joy, contriveth Spirit.
Now all life’s loveliness and power we have
Dissolved in this one moment, and our burning
Carries all shining upward, till in us
Life is not life, but the desire of God,
Himself desiring and himself accepting.
Now what was prophecy in us is made
Fulfilment: we are the hour and we are the joy,
We in our marvellousness of single knowledge,
Of Spirit breaking down the room of fate
And drawing into his light the greeting fire
Of God,—God known in ecstasy of love
Wedding himself to utterance of himself

CHEVROLET CAMARO 1968 Z-28

Arriving late on the pony car scene, the Camaro quickly made up for lost time with a host of luxury and performance options available on RS, SS, and Z-28 platforms. The long hood/short deck exterior was based on a 108-inch wheelbase and offered as coupe or convertible. Body construction was semi-unitized, where the front chassis is a sub-frame held by four rubber-isolated mounts and rear chassis is part of the unibody. This design gave a smoother and more quiet ride than a full unibody car, and allowed maximum space for the already small rear seat and trunk.

Initially nothing more than an option code designation, the Z-28 moniker stuck, and now models so equipped sported either Z-28 or 302 badges. Dual low-restriction mufflers, heavy-duty radiator with temperature-controlled fan, and 15×6-inch wheels were included with the Z-28 package. The potent 302 small-block engine remained the same. A dual-four-barrel cross-ram intake manifold was available, using two 600-cfm carburetors.

Racing legend Mark Donahue, driving the blue #6 Camaro, won ten out of the thirteen Trans Am races this year, easily winning the 1968 series. The Penske/Sunoco prepped 302 engine reportedly produced 482-horsepower. With SCCA rules stating parts used on race cars must be available to the public, the Penske/Donohue race team should be credited for helping bring many heavy-duty race items to dealer parts-counters.

The rear decklid spoiler, first seen on Z-28 models, was now available on all Camaros, and buyers could now combine the Z-28 package with the RS package. 7,199 examples of the second-year Z-28 were sold. Consistently finishing ahead of Mustangs on the track, the resulting publicity greatly helped overall Camaro sales. Total first year Camaro production totaled 220,906, with 235,417 models sold in 1968.

PANAMA: EL OTRO LADO

No wonder that El Otro Lado does everything it can to integrate itself, and its guests, with the local environment.

This approach is seen everywhere, but particularly in the architecture. The hotel’s four villas and the central ‘Gazebo’ have been designed to blur gently into the surrounding forest, letting guests get closer to the hum of the jungle’s native fauna. By the infinity-edge outdoor pool, which appears to flow gently into the pristine bay, the choice for visitors is simple: while away hours getting lost in literature borrowed from the hotel’s library, or relax to sounds that have been curated by renown broadcaster Gladys Palmera.

1967 FORD MUSTANG

The first of the Mustang’s many redesigns came in 1967, bringing with it a 390-ci V8 engine with 320-335 horsepower. Among the most well-known trims in the 1967 model year is the GT-500, a powerful machine inspired by the Shelby.

1967 also brought the introduction of the Mustang’s competitors: the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird. These cars have fought for supremacy of the pony-car class over the last 40 years, continuing to push each other forward. The result has been a series of reasonably priced yet powerful sports cars for the automobile enthusiast. Feeling pressure from their competition, Ford needed to make the Mustang more powerful so it could keep up with its competitors. The answer came in the form of a larger car. Although the wheelbase remained the same at 108 inches, the length of the vehicle was increased by two inches resulting in 183.6 inches from front to back. The car also featured a front-suspension track that was widened by 2.5 inches. The increased body size allowed Ford to put their first big-block engine in a Mustang. This optional 390-cubic-inch 6.4L V-8 motor was capable of producing an impressive 320 hp. As such, Ford was clearly able to keep up with the big dogs on the road. In fact, according to reports, the 390 cid equipped Mustang could achieve 0-60 mph in 7.4 seconds with a top speed of 115 mph.

1967 Model-Year Highlights

Two Inches Longer and a 2.5-inch Increase in Front Track
Painted Side Scoops to Match Color of Car
Concave Rear with Larger Tail Lights
    New 390-cubic-inch 6.4L V-8 Engine

(JOHN) CAGE TRANSMITTED

Joining the worldwide celebration of the centennial of John Cage, Norte Maar collaborates with E.A.T. (Experiments in Art and Technology) to present Cage Transmitted: 12 evenings of performance. The twelve unique evenings, one occurring each month, will span the calendar year of 2012 and will include music, poetry, theater, happenings, visual art, and dance.

Robert Whitman will perform Inside Out, a theater piece incorporating slides and film that was first presented at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1987 and has never before been performed in New York. Whitman is best known for his seminal and continuing work in creating innovative, non-narrative, imagistic theater pieces. He was a member of a group of visual artists—among them Allan Kaprow, Red Grooms, Jim Dine, and Claes Oldenburg—who began making theatrical work in the early 1960s that was performed in ad hoc spaces on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Whitman has since presented more than forty theater pieces in the United States and abroad—works that are visually and aurally rich, incorporating actors, films, slides, sounds, and evocative props in environments of the artist’s own making.
