Pina Bausch was one of the most influential figure in European contemporary dance. Visionary and innovative choreographer, she created a new paradigm for dance: a fusion of radical theatre, surreal art, sexual drama and danced body language, known as Tanztheater.
Pina. Dance, dance, otherwise we are lost is Wim Wenders’s “homage to the famous German choreographer renowned for giving dance a new language, and a deep bow to the beauty she released into the world.”
Wenders wanted to make a film about Pina Bausch for a quarter of a century, but only 3D technologies allowed him to translate on screen the emotional power derived through her choreographies and the currents of fear, anxiety and desires that pass invisibly between the dancers. Pina’s sudden death last summer put an end to their hopes of working together on a road movie, intended as a metaphor that would draw the viewer into Bausch’s world, but the director decided to go on with the project as an homage to her revolutionary artistic vision.
The documentary includes pieces of Bausch’s most famous choreographies with her company, the Tanztheater Wuppertal: Café Müller (1978) Kontakthof (1978), The Rite of Spring (1975), Full Moon (2006).
Indeed the world of cinema has always been fascinated by the German choreographer. Her work was also featured in several films, including Fellini’s E la Nave Va (And the Ship Sails On) and Pedro Almodóvar’s Hable con Ella (Talk to Her).
Pina, will be presented at the 61° Berlin Film Festival next February. We can now enjoy the trailer….simply amazing.
