ARCHIPELAGO ARCHITECTURE

My friend Miguel Mesa from Colombia, owner of  “Mesa Editores“  sent me this interesting book, which is much more than a simple compilation of information or a catalog of recent architecture in Colombia.

“Archipielago de Arquitectura”, is one of the latest editions of the Colombian editorial, “Mesa Editores” An independent publisher, part of the emerging scene of Colombian architecture. The architecture is also a sign of the times, not coincidentally, the quality and quantity of work that has emerged in parts of Colombia, which are being an example, throughout the world and are to draw attention to specialized Architecture media. Economic prosperity, good public policy, young talent and a lot to do. The book is divided with 7 young offices of architecture from Colombia: Oficina Informal, Camilo Restrepo, CTRL G + Federico Mesa, Manuel Villa, Mesa Editores, Paisajes Emergentes, Plan B: Arquitectura.

And texts from Florencia Rodriguez, Geoff Manaugh and Andrés Perea Ortega.

KUMAGAI HOUSE by Hiroshi Kuno + associates.

The new generation of architects in Japan is giving a new boost to contemporary architecture. This new boost, has its focus on spatial practices related to the topic of domesticity. Small houses have become great examples, almost as a manifest, constructed and inhabited.
These new spatial practices, has its focus on relationships, rather than the object itself. The relationships between the program and nature, between architecture and landscape. This is the case of the Houses Kumagai, by Hiroshi Kuno + associates.

MADE IN MIMBRE

Sometimes to value the local identity is necessary to leave the place where you come from.
This is not new, and perhaps it is almost a fact. If you are from a faraway place, like Chile, and you’re a designer or architect, that’s a big difference with the rest of the world, a difference that you can use to your advantage, if your work is good, and innovative.

Made in Mimbre, is a firm that combines contemporary design with local identity, based in Chile.

STUDIO BANANA TV/ INTERVIEWS LUISA LAMBRI

Studio Banana TV interviews Italian photographer Luisa Lambri on the occasion of her participation at the 12th Venice Architecture Biennale.

Architecture is a favorite subject for the Italian photographer, who approaches the houses subjectively and patiently. ‘I am photographing myself being there,’ she says.

Luisa Lambri’s photographs stand in clear contrast to the established practice of architectural photography which has traditionally focused its attention on the exteriors of buildings. She travels the world photographing architectural interiors, often spending extended periods of time experiencing the buildings before she begins shooting. Her photographs have captured unexpected moments and observations of houses by architects the likes of Alvar Aalto, Richard Neutra, R.M. Schindler, John Lautner, Philip Johnson, Luis Barragán, Marcel Breuer or Álvaro Siza.

WELCOME LESS IS MORE

The exhibition Superespacio / Welcome Less is More is a 1:1 scale reproduction, in wood, of one of the iconic works of modern architecture, that in 2011 will be 60 years, the Farnsworth House by the architect Mies Van der Rohe, build in Illinois, 1951. But, according to the author, the artist, Manuel Peralta, director of the artistic project called “SUPERESPACIO“, you should ask, ¿What is this?, ¿Is Architecture?, ¿Is Art?, and ¿Why is inside the Art Gallery?, maybe this must belong to the city. To learn more about the project, the author offered an appointment with a good cafe, in an open conversation.

I LOVE YOU MAGAZINE

Come and go. Some go there, when others come. ‘I LOVE YOU’ magazine is a publication which is inspired by the blogs, and by people in a way, very intuitive, writes, creates and publishes a blog, (nerds), usually with a very specific topic, to the point of absurdity. The independence, a specific topic, and a direct way. That is according to the founders, Christiane Bördner, an art director, and her photographer husband Marcus Gaab (together they run Berlin consultancy Agentur E), the main difference between a normal press and digital media such as blogs. This possibility.
The magazine is for women, and has no advertising inside.

The magazine is also interesting because in his blog, you can find visual material that perfectly complements the printed version of the magazine, taking the difference in a positive way. Understanding cyber space as a place that has its own identity. A series of videos, experimental, not so formal, and linked to fashion.

FAHRENHEIT 39

Fahrenheit 39, an exhibition that attempts to catalogue and inventory the current state of self-published books in Italy, curated by Emilio Macchia for Strativari.

FAHRENHEIT 39 , curated by Emilio Macchia, investigates publishing as an expressive medium, as filing system, a display system and as a platform for the practice of critical thinking and writing. The artists, authors, editors, writers and independent publishers who are involved in shaping these systems approach the book not only as a form of exhibition but also as an art form.

Traditionally graphic designers have played a key roll in shaping and forming the provided content of books, however, with recent developments and shifts in the roll of the designer in the process they are now in the position of drafting and editing content.

Self-published books are often produced in low editions and can be difficult to source. They allow us to consume content in a way conventional / trade books often do not, hindered by requests of the author, publisher and market demands. Fahrenheit 39 is an attempt to catalogue and inventory the current state of self-published books in Italy.

SAN ROCCO is a magazine about architecture.

SAN ROCCO does not solve problems. It is not a useful magazine.

SAN ROCCO is neither serious nor friendly.

SAN ROCCO is written by architects. As such, SAN ROCCO is not particularly intelligent, or philologically accurate. In SAN ROCCO, pictures are more important than texts.

SAN ROCCO is serious. It takes the risk of appearing naive.

AMO / PRADA – FANTASY LOOKBOOK AND MOTIONBOOK PROJECT

I do not want to talk about fashion, when I talk about the collaboration between AMO and PRADA, Marco Maggetto is perhaps the right person for this, but  I am interested in the collaboration between AMO, the mirror of the architectural office OMA, which is responsible for all projects that the traditional practice of architecture can not be covered. This is the last work in collaboration between PRADA and AMO, the “FANTASY LOOKBOOK” AND MOTIONBOOK PROJECT (Directed by James Lima).

As always leading the way, or  following the pulse of what’s coming.

HERE AND THERE

“I think it should be very personal and passionate, if you lose the passion it’s better to do nothing. If you have no interest in creating then you should not do it; nobody is asking you to do it.” Nakako Hayashi.

Here and There‘ is one of my favourite publications. The editorial is NAKAKO BOOKS, and the  publisher is  Nieves .The publication is edited, curated and produced by Nakako Hayashi. She has been working for a long time in the publishing world, for several important publications. During that period, he met many interesting people with whom, for some reason, became impossible to publish traditional journals. He then decided to make his own publication called ‘Here and There’. In the publications appear  all the people he met throught out the years (mostly friends of Nakako, nowadays). Published issues are directly linked to Nakako’s concerns of the moment. The result is difficult to classify, the design is  fantastic, the designer is the awesome Kazunari Hattori. The published content is simple and personal. In all the numbers there is Elien Fleiss, a close friend of Nakako, who began her career as a curator of art exhibitions, and made her name in 1992 by publishing the inspirational Purple magazine with Olivier Zahm. Over the next ten years, in its various incantations, Purple Prose, Purple Fashion and Purple Sex have become collectables.

I here recommend reading this short interview to Nakako Hayashi with very inspiring answers for those who believe their own project is similar. HERE.
